On the Road, Again...

Dear Readers,

Thank you for your kind responses to my last post. I am healing and feeling more "my old self" every day.

I shall be hitting the road with my son, the truck driver, for a 3 wk spree. Well, it is a spree for me, work for my son for at least 2 of those weeks. We are going to Burning Man and will be living the life for 1 wk at Black Rock City. We have planned and waited all year for this wonderful event and I'll be damned if I am going to miss it for a little heart attack. Anyway, I will be with my son 24 hrs a day while on the road and he will see to it that I get the attention I need should I need it. Am packing my boatload of pills, low-fat, low sodium foods, and lots of loose, comfortable clothing. While at BM, I will have volunteer MD's and RN's at the Med station and will be a Medevac ride away from the Reno hospital should things get serious.

Hopefully, I will return with good stories to tell and some pics of the grand sites and artwork to share.

US Medical System:On the one hand...

...it is terrific, if you arrive at the ER on the right day with the right diagnosis. I know first hand, at least for Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, as I have just had my first, hopefully only, heart attack. I have learned much this past week. I have learned that women display completely different symptoms when having a heart attack. For instance, I had no heart pain, just extreme fatigue, jaw, neck,left arm and upper chest ache. I could barely move, but did not have that heavy weight/pain in the heart muscle itself that most men experience. Because of the lack of pain, I initially ignored the symptoms. Except for lying down for a few hours, I did nothing different. Then I went to the beach to gather seaweed for mulching the garden and, then...whoa!... big jaw,chest,left arm ache and extreme fatigue. I almost could not move to get home.
I finally decided to call my MD who did immediate enzyme testing and sent me to the best hospital in the area, bypassing the hospital with which she was affiliated. Because of the diagnosis sent ahead by my MD, I spent almost no time in the ER waiting room, going first before others in more obvious pain but whose diagnoses were not life-threatening. Everyone was very kind and attentive. The ER wasted little time setting up endless bloodwork, taking rather repetitive histories (I must have told the same story at least 6 times on admittance along with my list of current meds (there is way too much redundancy), doing physical exams, monitoring heart rate, BP, etc. Was admitted to the floor after about 6 hrs (waiting for a room to open up) where more of the same questions and tests were repeated. I was scheduled, after talking to the primary physician, the cardiologist, the assistant cardiologist, and some other members of the team, for a cardiac catheterization and possible stent placement for the next day, though I was told it probably not take place until the day after. Fortunately, I did get the procedure done the next day and all went well, the 3 stents were placed in the RCA, and I made it through recovery without problem. Though I had to do some fast-talking, I was released from the hospital the next afternoon on a ton of new meds. I pushed for the release as I knew the bill was already going to be more than I can ever pay for in this lifetime. And, because I had not slept since entering the hospital as the endless treatments and bloodwork had me on an every hour to 2 hours schedule around the clock. Sleep is necessary for healing, and, I was not getting any.
So, on the good side, the service provided was excellent, though there was really massive redundancy which might be cut back. The professionals were great and all involved in my care were thoughtful, attentive, and responsive to my needs. Great care!
On the other hand, the negative side, living on a meager monthly check and no insurance at this time, I will be in massive debt for the rest of my life. Not easy to live with, especially since this all happened about 3 weeks prior to my getting on Medicare.
Great timing, eh? Still, had I not listened to my inner voice and taken myself to the MD, gone to the hospital, and had the stents placed, I would have gone off on a month tour of the USA and a date with Burning Man with my trucker son, spent the week at BM biking and walking miles; probably would have had a massive MI instead of a smaller one, hundreds of miles from the nearest hospital, perhaps dying on the road to somewhere.
Sure wish we had a single payer Universal healthcare system; and, so do all my doctors.

I am proud to say that my Congressman did the right thing and voted "no" on the "FISA bill." As to the other 41 Democrats who voted "yea" and the 9 Dems who did not vote at all, I say "a pox on your houses!" Shame on you! At a time when this administration has accrued too many powers, some illegal, all anti-democratic, to vote to give that little worm Gonzo and his evil bosses, Chainer and Chimp, yet more power is simply obscene. We really need to clean house.

And, why the hell did we not even know about this vote in advance? We could have, perhaps, done something to change the outcome, made phone calls, sent e-mails, essentially harried the Dems who were planning to vote yea or abstain from voting. Where was our warning signal, our wake-up call?

If you want to colour code my fear of an administrative coup (which actually has already happened, quietly), colour it red. We are in deep doodoo, fellow Americans.
And, now, we may lose California to a reorganization of representation, giving them a Republican majority to win the 2008 election?

Is it time to move, yet?
(Oh, forgot, cannot get a passport without a year-long wait, now...closing the borders?)

Thank you very much for voting against the "FISA bill. It disturbs me greatly that this vote came without warning and that so many Democrats supported it when AG Gonzales and the White House have amply demonstrated that they rate impeachment, not extended powers. Thank you for your sanity and your loyalty to the Constitution and the citizens of this United States of America.

The sky is falling, the country is falling, the bridge is falling

Bridges, dams, roads, levees, undergrounds, pipes, drinking water, schools, laws, justice, lives...all falling apart while the Republicans keep money rolling from citizen pockets to corporate and corporate-lovers' pockets, blocking, at all costs, any money from going to support, repair, or create infrastructure in this used-to-be-democratically-run used-to-be-republic.

I have not been able to post this week. Yes, busy with garden and freezing garden produce, but that is not the main reason. I just cannot seem to stop vomiting. Perhaps I should stop listening to what is going on in Washington.

Gonzo Resigns, Bush Appoints Interim AG ?

Now that would be very much in keeping with this administration's type of strategies. I believe I heard this idea on Hartmann's show offered by a caller. Basically, the idea is that the administration has planned all along to let Gonzo spew endless sweet nothings to Congress until the mid-summer recess, at which time Gonzo will resign and Bush will appoint an interim Attorney General, just like Gonzo, to serve until Bush's time runs out. Seems like an idea BushCo might appreciate and use with ease.
How absolutely elegant. Please let it not be so.

Compassion

Three Members of Congress!

We are so close.

...the good news is that the mounting public pressure is having an effect and John Conyers confided that if three more members of Congress sign on to the call for impeachment he will initiate proceedings.

At this point, we really need to push the effort to reach any undecideds. We are so close to making a move to discredit and remove these thugs from office. I, for one, believe that the move must be made, whether it is successful or not. The alternative is accepting things as they are, including the desecration of our Constitution and republic plus another year of horrendous control and destruction by the current administration. Who knows what horror that may bring, and I do mean horror.

Make the calls, send the e-mails and faxes, now, while we may.

My Attitude Towards Nuclear Energy Has Not Changed

I have come to understand that conservation of energy plus use of alternative sources such as wind,water,and solar may not be enough to counter the loss of oil in the not-so-distant future due to the rising usage and need for energy. Sorry, but I do not care. We have created this mess and continue to create it and it is we who must pay for it, one way or another. Changing light bulbs, reducing driving, recycling everything possible, buying alternative vehicles, reducing consumption of everything, not supporting the corporations, etc, etc, all helps. But, it will not be enough for maintaining our current lifestyles in our current world. But, building nuclear plants in the numbers needed to offset the oil and maintain things as they are is not the answer. For one thing, they are the worst source of pollution on the planet, and one of the worst man-made sources of danger on earth.

Atomic reactors contribute to global warming rather than abating it. In construction, in the mining, milling and enriching of the fuel, in on-going "normal" releases of heat and radioactivity, in dismantling and decommissioning, in managing radioactive wastes, in future terror attacks, in proliferation of nuke weapons, and much much more, atomic energy is an unmitigated eco-disaster.

To this list we must now add additional tangible evidence that reactors allegedly built to withstand "worst case" earthquakes in fact cannot. And when they go down, the investment is lost, and power shortages arise (as is now happening in Japan) that are filled by the burning of fossil fuels.

It costs up to ten times as much to produce energy from a nuke as to save it with efficiency. Advances in wind, solar and other green "Solartopian" technologies mean atomic energy simply cannot compete without massive subsidies, loan guarantees and government insurance to protect it from catastrophes to come.

Time for change. What I think we must all come to accept really soon is that the change of which I am speaking is a massive loss of life-as-we-know-it, massive conservation efforts, an alteration in viewpoint as to what we really need in order to be happy. We need to live life far more simply, folks, without the appliances, commutes, jet-travel, large homes, multiple vehicles, and endless self-gratifications. We need to put the Earth First and explore life on a personal basis. We need to learn and accept that "stuff" is not where it is at.

White House Shoving its Weight Around Again

So now, according to the Washington Post, the White House says the Justice Department

will never be allowed to pursue contempt charges initiated by Congress against White House officials once the president has invoked executive privilege.

All hail the little king who all can now see clearly with his clothes off, not that he has been wearing much for some time.

Revive the statute for an Independent Counsel? This was a suggestion by Bruce Fine on Randi Rhodes this afternoon. This would be to preserve the separation of powers. But, do we have the time for this, before smiling BushCo pulls something? I am still for the Inherent Contempt method, though I do see the wisdom Of Fine's position. That would assuredly be the best course under normal conditions. But, these are very different times and this is not an ordinary administration; these are dangerous thugs, bullies who like to beat up, torture and kill the innocent, and must be treated as such.

Looks Like Valerie & Joe have been shut down...

...by a Bush appointed judge who dismissed their civil suit. Sorry, guys. There is no justice left in this country, I am afraid, and will not be any until this administration is impeached, all of them, gone.

So, we can do nothing in the courts. The President can make laws without Congress having anything to do with it. The President can arrest, hold without reason or defense counsel or notice for an indefinite amount of time anyone, can assume all property and holdings of anyone who gets in his way, and their friends, there are concentration camps being prepared on American soil, and most of this country continues to watch tv and look the other way. Is it time to leave yet?

I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, find that, due to the unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States posed by acts of violence threatening the peace and stability of Iraq and undermining efforts to promote economic reconstruction and political reform in Iraq and to provide humanitarian assistance to the Iraqi people, it is in the interests of the United States to take additional steps with respect to the national emergency declared in Executive Order 13303 of May 22, 2003, and expanded in Executive Order 13315 of August 28, 2003, and relied upon for additional steps taken in Executive Order 13350 of July 29, 2004, and Executive Order 13364 of November 29, 2004. I hereby order:

Section 1. (a) Except to the extent provided in section 203(b)(1), (3), and (4) of IEEPA (50 U.S.C. 1702(b)(1), (3), and (4)), or in regulations, orders, directives, or licenses that may be issued pursuant to this order, and notwithstanding any contract entered into or any license or permit granted prior to the date of this order, all property and interests in property of the following persons, that are in the United States, that hereafter come within the United States, or that are or hereafter come within the possession or control of United States persons, are blocked and may not be transferred, paid, exported,

withdrawn, or otherwise dealt in: any person determined by the Secretary of the Treasury, in consultation with the Secretary of State and the Secretary of Defense,

(A) threatening the peace or stability of Iraq or the Government of Iraq; or

(B) undermining efforts to promote economic reconstruction and political reform in Iraq or to provide humanitarian assistance to the Iraqi people;

(ii) to have materially assisted, sponsored, or provided financial, material, logistical, or technical support for, or goods or services in support of, such an act or acts of violence or any person whose property and interests in property are blocked pursuant to this order; or

(iii) to be owned or controlled by, or to have acted or purported to act for or on behalf of, directly or indirectly, any person whose property and interests in property are blocked pursuant to this order.

(b) The prohibitions in subsection (a) of this section include, but are not limited to, (i) the making of any contribution or provision of funds, goods, or services by, to, or for the benefit of any person whose property and interests in property are blocked pursuant to this order, and (ii) the

receipt of any contribution or provision of funds, goods, or services from any such person.

Sec. 2. (a) Any transaction by a United States person or within the United States that evades or avoids, has the purpose

of evading or avoiding, or attempts to violate any of the prohibitions set forth in this order is prohibited.

(b) Any conspiracy formed to violate any of the prohibitions set forth in this order is prohibited.

Sec. 3. For purposes of this order:

(a) the term "person" means an individual or entity;

(b) the term "entity" means a partnership, association, trust, joint venture, corporation, group, subgroup, or other organization; and

(c) the term "United States person" means any United States citizen, permanent resident alien, entity organized under the laws of the United States or any jurisdiction within the United States (including foreign branches), or any person in the United States.

Sec. 4. I hereby determine that the making of donations of the type specified in section 203(b)(2) of IEEPA (50 U.S.C. 1702(b)(2)) by, to, or for the benefit of, any person whose property and interests in property are blocked pursuant to this order would seriously impair my ability to deal with the national emergency declared in Executive Order 13303 and expanded in Executive Order 13315, and I hereby prohibit such donations as provided by section 1 of this order.

Sec. 5. For those persons whose property and interests in property are blocked pursuant to this order who might have a constitutional presence in the United States, I find that, because of the ability to transfer funds or other assets

instantaneously, prior notice to such persons of measures to be taken pursuant to this order would render these measures ineffectual. I therefore determine that for these measures to be effective in addressing the national emergency declared in Executive Order 13303 and expanded in Executive Order 13315, there need be no prior notice of a listing or determination made pursuant to section 1(a) of this order.

Sec. 6. The Secretary of the Treasury, in consultation with the Secretary of State and the Secretary of Defense, is hereby authorized to take such actions, including the promulgation of rules and regulations, and to employ all powers granted to the President by IEEPA as may be necessary to carry out the purposes of this order. The Secretary of the Treasury may redelegate any of these functions to other officers and agencies of the United States Government, consistent with applicable law. All agencies of the United States Government are hereby directed to take all appropriate measures within their authority to carry out the provisions of this order and, where appropriate, to advise the Secretary of the Treasury in a timely manner of the measures taken.

Sec. 7. Nothing in this order is intended to affect the continued effectiveness of any rules, regulations, orders, licenses, or other forms of administrative action issued, taken, or continued in effect heretofore or hereafter under 31 C.F.R. chapter V, except as expressly terminated, modified, or suspended by or pursuant to this order.

Sec. 8. This order is not intended to, and does not, create any right, benefit, or privilege, substantive or procedural, enforceable at law or in equity by any party against the United States, its departments, agencies, instrumentalities, or entities, its officers or employees, or any other person.

We are talking seriously scary here. If our legislators do not respond to this with some serious action immediately, we are yet deeper in the little king's hands. What this order says, basically, is that the Bush administration can confiscate all the property of anyone they want, without notice, simply by defining them as "posing a risk" of undermining the Bush administration's efforts in Iraq. I would think that this would include you and I as wellas the majority of U.S. citizens who have been polling that they the want this war to end, now. And, how about the Senators? Could this be used to bully and cower them to accept whatever BushCo decrees? Same with the Justices, the injustice department, and, every other person in the USA who BushCo wished to intimidate. If you are not worried, you should be.

Been drinking tap water all along so this is no big change for me. For some, it may be so; but, worth it for the environment. We must all agree to put the Earth first if we are to save this planet for the generations to come.

Tonight's the Night (for the filibuster) !

Goddess bless Harry Reid for finally getting the message...the pundits were wrong and the bloggers, right, of course. The people of this country are sick of this war, this administration, and sick of being ignored. We want the war to end, the wanton throwing away of our money to stop, and the ugly Republican shenanigans to stop. I mean President Clinton was made to step down because of "the private, personal blowjob;" but, the Republicans seem to be quite willing to let their own do anything, and I do mean anything, even in diapers, as long as it is low, illegal, immoral, and makes money or at least does not blow any, pun intended. I am really sick to death of the lot of them, from the top man on down.

So let the Republican Senators talk. Let them tell us exactly why they believe that our soldiers should continue to die for an illegal, immoral, and expensive-in-every-way war. Then watch them get defeated at the polls next time 'round.

So, hurrah! for Harry and please keep it up. The country is with you all the way, (giggle).

The New Yorker Says Impeach Cheney Now

Thanks to Dave Pollard of How to Save the World, I read The New Yorker article on Dick Cheney that essentially laid out why we need to act now, not wait out the 1 1/2 years left of his term, to impeach the Vice-President who is doing so much injury to this country and, indeed, the world.

More than anyone else, including his mentor and departed co-conspirator, Donald Rumsfeld, Cheney has been the intellectual author and bureaucratic facilitator of the crimes and misdemeanors that have inflicted unprecedented disgrace on our country’s moral and political standing: the casual trashing of habeas corpus and the Geneva Conventions; the claim of authority to seize suspects, including American citizens, and imprison them indefinitely and incommunicado, with no right to due process of law; the outright encouragement of “cruel,” “inhuman,” and “degrading” treatment of prisoners; the use of undoubted torture, including waterboarding (Cheney: “a no-brainer for me”), which for a century the United States had prosecuted as a war crime; and, of course, the bloody, nightmarish Iraq war itself, launched under false pretenses, conducted with stupefying incompetence, and escalated long after public support for it had evaporated, at the cost of scores of thousands of lives, nearly half a trillion dollars, and the crippling of America’s armed forces, which no longer overawe and will take years to rebuild.

Kucinich out-polls Democratic front-runners on climate change, global warming

Kucinich always brings them in when they really look at him and his treatment of the issues.

Congressman and Democratic Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich out-polled front runners Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama and all but one of the other Democratic candidates in an online poll that asked the question: "Which candidate's position on dealing with the climate crisis do you prefer?"

Only former Senator John Edwards received more votes than Kucinich. Senator Clinton came in third, Senator Obama fourth, and New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson fifth. The other candidates were in single digits.

NEW YORK - An angry Dennis Kucinich lashed out at John Edwards on Friday, saying his Democratic rival showed "a consistent lack of integrity" by suggesting fewer candidates should participate in presidential forums and then trying to explain his remark to reporters.
"This is a serious matter and I'm calling him on it," Kucinich, an Ohio congressman, said in a telephone interview Friday. "Whispering, trying to rig an election, then denying what's going on and making excuses. It all reflects a consistent lack of integrity."

Kucinich's comments came after Edwards and Hillary Rodham Clinton were overheard Thursday discussing the possibility of limiting the number of participants in future presidential forums.

In an exchange captured on camera and open microphone by broadcasters after an NAACP forum in Detroit, Edwards approached Clinton onstage and whispered in her ear.

"We should try to have a more serious and a smaller group," Edwards said, and Clinton agreed.

"Our guys should talk," Clinton said, complaining the format had "trivialized" the discussion.

Kucinich, who typically polls in the low single digits, clearly felt the slight was directed at him. All eight Democratic contenders took part in the program, including Barack Obama, Bill Richardson, Chris Dodd, Joe Biden, Mike Gravel and Kucinich.

Later Friday, Kucinich sent letters to both Clinton and Edwards challenging them to one-on-one debates, the Kucinich campaign said.

"If you are truly seeking debates where there are fewer participants and where there is more meaningful and serious discourse, this is a great opportunity for us to join together in an open discussion on behalf of the American people," the letter said.
